This was my first big project as an apprentice. The tree was already carved out of foam before I arrived, the other apprentice and I were tasked with the long process of giving the tree its bark texture and finish. Like our other foam sculptures, the process started with glue and cheesecloth. However, in this case, the cheesecloth was applied in a way to create the base bark texture. It was scrunched and layered in a way that modeled the bark effect. Then different mixtures were layered on top to further pronounce these ridges, applied with anything from our fingers to hair combs. I also was tasked creating and mixing the moss for the final touches after the tree was painted.
